AWS European Sovereign Cloud general availability (15 January 2026)
Claim
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud became generally available on 15 January 2026, with its first data-centre region in Brandenburg, Germany, backed by a €7.8 billion commitment. It is run through EU-only German subsidiaries with EU-citizen managing directors (Stéphane Israël and Stefan Hoechbauer) and an EU-only advisory board. But the legal entity is still wholly owned by Amazon.com Inc., and commentators have pointed out that CLOUD Act exposure arguably remains.
