EU AI Act — GPAI obligations applicable (2 August 2025)
Claim
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 (the AI Act) was adopted on 13 June 2024, published in the EU’s Official Journal on 12 July 2024, and came into force on 2 August 2024. The bans on certain uses and the AI-literacy duties took effect on 2 February 2025. The duties on providers of general-purpose AI (GPAI) models kicked in on 2 August 2025, and the Commission can enforce them from 2 August 2026. GPAI models already on the market before August 2025 must fully comply by 2 August 2027. Fines for GPAI providers can reach 3% of yearly worldwide revenue or €15 million, whichever is higher (AI Act Article 101).
