Kadrey v. Meta — Summary Judgment (25 June 2025)
Claim
In Kadrey v. Meta Platforms, Inc., No. 23-CV-03417-VC (N.D. Cal.), 2025 WL 1752484, Judge Vince Chhabria ruled in Meta’s favour on fair use for the books of 13 plaintiffs, without a full trial. The ruling was narrow and tied to the specific facts: the plaintiffs had not built a strong enough case that the training hurt the market for their books. Judge Chhabria pointedly said his ruling did not give AI training on copyrighted works a green light more generally.
