Meta Llama multimodal EU withdrawal (18 July 2024)
Claim
Meta said it would not release its upcoming multimodal Llama model (one that handles text, images, and more) in the European Union, blaming “the unpredictable nature of the European regulatory environment.” Its specific complaint was about GDPR duties around using EU users’ data to train AI, and it came after the Irish Data Protection Commission asked Meta to hold off on plans to use public Facebook and Instagram content for training.
