Stanford AI Index 2026 (April 2026)

April 2026

Claim

The 2026 edition of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI) AI Index Report was published in April 2026. The ninth yearly edition; it covers research, technical performance, responsible AI, economics, science, medicine, education, policy, and public opinion. The key 2026 findings the framework draws on: the capability gap between the top US and Chinese models has all but closed; 44 countries now run government-backed supercomputers; 80 of the 95 most notable 2025 models were released without their training code; the Foundation Model Transparency Index average score dropped to 40 (from 58); and almost the entire global AI industry still depends on TSMC’s chip factories in Taiwan.
